Check Your Attitude

Learning
front of school building

It’s September. Back to school month. Maybe you’re too old to be officially headed back to school but that doesn’t mean you’re too old to stop learning.

As an Alexander teacher, I’m often mistakenly referred to as a bodyworker. But just as my professional title indicates, I’m a teacher. I teach students about posture and all that it entails.

One of the things I have to pay careful attention to with my students is their attitudes toward themselves and learning. Over the years I’ve discovered just how much your attitude can be a major stumbling block in learning and moving toward your goals.

If you’ve worked with me and been to my studio you know that I like quotes of various sorts. I always have a quote up in the waiting area. This month I’m going to share my favorite quotes related to learning. I’ll let them speak for themselves. I’ve done my best to attribute them to the correct author, but I don’t guarantee accuracy.

A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. (Einstein)

One of the reasons people stop learning is that they become less and less willing to risk failure. (John W. Gardner)

You can’t do something you don’t know if you keep on doing what you do know. (F.M. Alexander)

It is what we think we know that keeps us from learning. (Chester Barnard)

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. (Marcel Proust)

We learn more by looking for the answer to a question and not finding it than we do from learning the answer itself. (Lloyd Alexander)

Perfecting oneself is as much unlearning as it is learning. (Dijkstra)

I think you learn more if you’re laughing at the same time. (Mary Ann Shaffer)

The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you. (B.B. King)

If you find yourself embarking on learning something new this Fall, whatever it is, keep your attitude in mind. Don’t let how you think about yourself and learning be the stumbling block that gets in the way.

P.S. Are you a subscriber to my e-newsletter? If you like this blog and are craving more information on how to move better and feel better there’s no better time to sign up. You’ll get a free booklet with tips for exploring your posture (that has nothing to do with standing up straight and pulling your shoulders back. I promise!). And once a month I’ll pop into your inbox with new ideas for you to experiment with. In addition, you’ll be the first to know about any upcoming events, local or online.
