Less

Mind and Muscle
sign "less is more"

Less is one of my favorite words.

And one of my favorite questions to ask myself is: “can I do less?”

If you have been following my blog up to now you will know that excessive muscular tension is a contributing factor to poor posture and musculoskeletal pain.

Therefore, one way to work on improving your posture is to reduce the amount of excess muscular tension in you—to reduce the amount of holding on you do.

In other words, do less of what you are already doing that is not helpful. Excess muscular tension is not helpful. Not helpful for posture, balance, breathing, or easy movement.

The problem is if you carry around this excess tension all the time it begins to feel normal to you. You don’t even realize it.

One way to get around this problem is to not worry about it!

Really!

Just ask yourself generally, “can I do less at this moment?”

As you are reading this right now try it.

Go ahead and ask yourself generally, “can I do less at this moment?”

And see how you respond.

I usually find that by sticking with the general question “can I do less at this moment?”, I can let go of specific excess tension in myself that I wasn’t even registering at the time.

Asking yourself this general question from time to time every day is not a big commitment. No matter how busy you think you are, it is something you have time for.

Be careful though—you might find the question quite addicting after a while—doing less can really do a body good!
